Skrtel facing long injury layoff
06/10/2008
Scans on the injured knee of Liverpool's Martin Skrtel have revealed the defender suffered a serious knee injury yesterday and may be out for several months.
The Slovakian was found to have ruptured the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in yesterday's 3-2 victory over Manchester City at Eastlands after falling awkwardly in a challenge with Ched Evans.
Skrtel was in obvious pain on the pitch and had to be stretchered off after being given oxygen by the club's medical staff.
"Martin underwent a scan this morning which showed damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee," club spokesman Ian Cotton told the Liverpool website.
"He will see a specialist tomorrow to assess the extent of the injury and will then have an accurate idea of the timescales involved before he is back playing again."
Skrtel's injury is similar to that suffered by Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien recently, although Essien ruptured his anterior ligament.
A comparable recovery period is likely for the Reds stopper, however, meaning he will be out of action for several months - possibly until the end of the 2008/09 season.
