Smith: Rangers title challenge still on track

20/05/2008

Walter Smith has claimed Rangers still have a good chance of winning the Scottish Premier League title following their 3-0 win over St Mirren.

The Gers bounced back from their Uefa Cup final defeat to Zenit St Petersburg last Wednesday and the 1-1 draw with Motherwell at the weekend with a dominant performance at Love Street.

An early strike from Kris Boyd settled the visitors' nerves before fellow forward Jean-Claude Darcheville added two more goals to put the result beyond doubt later in the game.

And Smith, whose side play Aberdeen on Thursday and must better Celtic's result against Dundee United to overhaul them in the title race, said he believed there was still a chance of doing so.

"We are pleased to win the game and get back on track," he told the BBC.

"It was an awkward pitch and the boys handled it very well.

"Now we go to Pittodrie knowing that with a win comes the possibility of winning the championship."

Rangers had held the upper hand over their Glasgow rivals until they dropped two points at Fir Park over the weekend to allow the Bhoys to move above them on goal difference.

If the Ibrox outfit can snatch the league crown this week they will still be on course for a domestic treble - they have already secured the League Cup earlier this year and play Queen of the South in the Scottish Cup final on Saturday.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18600903-ADNFCR
