Sorensen slams Hutton challenge
21/10/2008
Stoke City goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen has claimed he was lucky to avoid being blinded by a 'reckless' challenge from Tottenham's Alan Hutton on Sunday.
The Scotland defender challenged for a loose ball against Sorensen during Spurs' 2-1 defeat at the Britannia Stadium, a loss which leaves the Londoners bottom of the Premier League without a win in eight games.
But Sorensen, who needed several stitches in his eye socket after sustaining a nasty-looking gash, claims the frustration felt by the club's players should not have boiled over into the game.
"It is incredibly fortunate," Sorensen told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet.
"I have been sewn up in the eye socket and it is miraculous that there has been no more damage.
"We are at a stage where it is not funny any more. He could easily have avoided hitting me.
"He had no chance to reach the ball but he still threw himself into it, leading with his studs."
Sorensen thanked the Stoke medical staff, who he said did a "very good job" repairing the damage and ensured his face was not "totally destroyed".
"It was a millimetre off me losing my sight, so I am relieved," he added.
"I can just look up to the heavens and say 'thank you'."
