Spurs suffer first defeat under Redknapp
15/11/2008
Tottenham Hotspur have lost their first game since Harry Redknapp took over from Juande Ramos after a 2-1 defeat at Fulham.
Error-prone goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was partly responsible for the Cottagers first goal and Andy Johnson swooped to make it 2-0 midway through the second half.
Fraizer Campbell got a late goal for Spurs but it was not enough to stop the north Londoners slipping to defeat.
Gomes' error came at the end of the first half when Simon Davies' shot from the edge of the box brushed Jonathon Woodgate and then trickled through the hands of the Brazilian.
The Spurs keeper proved he can make saves with spectacular dives to keep out Clint Dempsey and Jimmy Bullard. But he could do nothing to stop Johnson from scoring after 70 minutes.
Campbell's effort was a mere consolation for Spurs who now slip back into the relegation zone. The win moves the Cottagers into ninth.
Newcastle United are out of the bottom three thanks to a late comeback against Wigan helped them share the spoils.
Ryan Taylor had given Wigan the lead but Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins scored in the last ten minutes. The Magpies thought they were heading for victory only to be denied by Titus Bramble's goal in the 89th minute.
Taylor scored the opening goal for Wigan with an excellent drive that gave Shay Given no chance.
The midfielder picked the ball up on the edge of the box and struck it with the outside of his boot causing it to curl away from the Magpies goalkeeper into the top corner.
Joey Barton was carried off with an injury before Wigan were reduced to ten men when Emmerson Boyce received a second yellow card.
Newcastle continued to press forward and were rewarded when Owen stabbed home the equaliser before Martins fired home their second with three minutes remaining.
However, Bramble rose to head home a corner against his former club to give Wigan a deserved point.
Elsewhere, Blackburn Rovers slipped into the relegation zone after their 2-1 defeat to Sunderland.
The Black Cats had deserved to win the Carling Cup tie between the two teams on Wednesday and got a quick revenge at Ewood Park.
Rovers had taken the lead on the stroke of half time when Christopher Samba rose in the middle of a crowd of players to head in Morten Gamst Pedersen's corner.
However, Sunderland were level soon after the break when Paul Robinson dropped a corner at the feet of Kenwyne Jones who made no mistake.
Roy Keane's men made sure of all three points when Steed Malbranque set up Djibril Cisse for the winner.
At Upton Park West Ham United and Portsmouth played out a goalless draw. West Ham have now gone seven games without a win but remain in 13th place while the point leaves Pompey in eighth.
