Swindon manager Malpas departs
14/11/2008
Swindon Town have parted company with their manager Maurice Malpas "by mutual agreement" after the club's poor start to the 2008/09 season.
The League One side are languishing in 17th place in the third tier of English football, having won just four of their first 14 matches this season.
Malpas leaves after only 11 months in the job, having taken over in January, earning Swindon just ten wins in that time.
The Robins have also been knocked out of two cups in less than a week, after losing 2-0 to Brighton in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Wednesday and suffering the ignominy of a shock 1-0 defeat away to part-time village team Histon in the FA Cup first round last weekend.
And despite his previous managerial experience with both Scottish Premier League side Motherwell and the Scotland Under-21s, Malpas has carried the can for the team's poor showings in recent weeks.
"Swindon Town Football Club have this morning announced that Maurice Malpas will be leaving the County Ground with immediate effect by mutual agreement," a brief statement from the club confirmed.
"Assistant manager David Byrne will be taking charge of team affairs until further notice.
"The board would like to place on record their thanks for the professionalism that Maurice brought to the club in so many areas during his tenure."
