Terry "desperate" for Champions League success
01/05/2008
Chelsea captain John Terry says he is "desperate" to win the Champions League this season to answer the club's critics.
The former England captain led his side to a 4-3 aggregate win over Liverpool after extra-time at Stamford Bridge last night, as goals from Frank Lampard and a Didier Drogba double gave them a famous win.
And Terry believes the Blues need to lift the European Cup soon in order to prove they are among the world's elite club sides.
"We won the Premier League two years running and we've won other trophies and it takes a great side to do that," Terry said.
"But a Champions League trophy would answer a few critics and it is something I am desperate to win."
Chelsea have only two continental trophies to their name - the now-defunct Cup Winners Cup in 1971 and 1998 - and despite reaching three semi-finals in four seasons, this year will be the club's first ever Champions League final.
"Until recently we were not a club to challenge for everything," Terry continued.
"We'd win the occasional trophy like the FA Cup in 1997 and 2000, but we were never a problem for the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, who have done well over the years.
"But they've all had to start somewhere and now we're at the beginning of that stage."
