Tevez penalty sees Manchester United through

11/11/2008

Manchester United progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Queen's Park Rangers at Old Trafford.

It took a Carlos Tevez penalty just 14 minutes from time for United to see off the Championship side, and QPR came desperately close to snatching an equaliser in the dying minutes.

Tevez scored from the spot to liven what had been a dull encounter after R's defender Peter Ramage fouled Danny Welbeck in the area.

Sir Alex Ferguson gave a selection of youngsters including Rafael da Silva, Darron Gibson and Rodrigo Possebon starts alongside more experienced campaigners such as Gary Neville, John O'Shea and Tevez.

QPR goalkeeper Radek Cerny saved well from Tevez to deny United the lead after 16 minutes, but nearly spilled a Nani shot into the path of Ji-Sung Park moments later.

They were the only real chances of a lacklustre first-half, but Park nearly got the second period off to a great start, but his 30-yard shot came back off the woodwork.

Chances were few and far between before Tevez's penalty, which spurred the visitors into life.

Samuel di Carmine had the ball in the net, but it was disallowed for offside, while Dexter Blackstock and Emanuel Ledesma both missed glorious chances to equalise.

United held on for a win which will see them among the last eight teams in the hat for Saturday's quarter-final draw.
