Toffees swoop for Castillo
29/08/2008
Everton have completed the signing of Ecuador international midfielder Segundo Castillo from Red Star Belgrade.
The 26-year-old, who was a member of his country's 2006 World Cup squad and played against England in their 1-0 defeat in the second round, underwent a medical on Merseyside yesterday before finalising terms over a deal late last night.
Castillo, who plays in a deep-lying role in the centre of the park, joined Red Star from Ecuadorian side El Nacional two years ago.
He will make the switch to the Premier League subject to a work permit - the application for which is already pending.
However, it is anticipated there will be few problems in lodging a successful bid for a permit, given that Castillo has played 33 times for his country since making his debut in 2005.
Castillo is the Toffees' second completed signing of the summer following the arrival of Danish international Lars Christian Jacobsen earlier this week.
However, manager David Moyes has been busy in the transfer market in recent days - agreeing terms with Manchester United for their injury-ravaged striker Louis Saha.
