Tottenham win race for Croatian playmaker Luka Modric

26/04/2008

Tottenham have signed the Croatian midfielder Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb for a fee believed to be in excess of £15 million.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the 22-year-old had visited Newcastle to discuss a possible move to Kevin Keegan's revitalized side, while Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal had also been linked with the player.

However, it has now been confirmed that, subject to a medical and work permit, Modric will be playing at White Hart Lane next season.

The playmaker originally came to prominence in the Bosnian league, later moving to Croatia and playing for Inter Zapresic before signing for Dinamo in 2005.

He also played in his country's home and away victories over England, which spelled the end for national coach Steve McLaren.

A statement on the London side's website read: "The club is delighted to announce that it has reached agreement with Dinamo Zagreb for the transfer of midfielder Luka Modric.

"Personal terms have been agreed with the player and he will now undertake a medical and apply for a work permit."

The news is likely to add speculation that Aaron Lennon will move away from Spurs in the summer.

The winger has recently been linked with Manchester City, whose boss Sven Goran Erikkson has written up a list of players he wishes to buy to push the club forward.
