Two wins will give United the title, claims Ferguson
14/04/2008
Manchester United will be the 2007/08 Premier League champions if they can win both of their next two matches, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.
The manager believes if the Red Devils can beat Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea in their next two away games it will give them the title for the second successive season.
Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Owen Hargreaves meant United beat fellow title rivals Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday to eliminate the Gunners from contention.
However, Ferguson has called on his players to lift their game for two more matches at Ewood Park and Stamford Bridge, which he believes will kill off the challenge of the Blues who are now the only side with a realistic chance of overhauling his team.
"I said [before the Arsenal match] if we win our next three games it would be enough," said Ferguson.
"We have two to go, so if we win them we're champions."
On yesterday's match against Arsene Wenger's side, Ferguson admitted his team had looked "nervous" - especially in the first half.
But he praised his players for coming through what he described as "a big, big game [against] a very good team".
"They were the better team in the first half and I thought we were a bit nervous," the Scot continued.
"Our passing was poor, I thought our confidence in expressing ourselves was poor, I couldn't wait to get to half time.
"There was always a second team for me, though, because [second-half substitutes Carlos] Tevez and Anderson were always going to play a part.
"When Arsenal scored it forced my hand and we were fantastic after that. Wayne [Rooney] could have had a hat-trick, we played some good football, Arsenal had fantastic moments themselves and it was just an incredible game.
"I think Arsenal were unlucky not to get something from it."
