United's £20 million bid for Silva rejected by Valencia

Manchester United have had a bid for Valencia's David Silva turned down by the Spanish club, according to the player's agent.

The star of Euro 2008 was the subject a bid from United, believed to be in the region of £20 million, as is also said to be a target of Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, although the Anfield club are unlikely to be able to raise the funds needed to prise him away from Valencia.

"United made an offer for David Silva, but this has been turned down by Valencia," Silva's agent Julio Llorente said.

The 22-year-old now looks set to stay at the Mestalla and his ruled out a move to England for the foreseeable future, preferring instead to join Real Madrid or Barcelona, if he does decide to leave Valencia.

"Silva doesn't want to play in England because he is happy at Valencia," Llorente said.

"His family are settled and if he was to move it would only be to another Spanish club, like Real Madrid or Barcelona.

"David Silva will start the new season at Valencia."

"He doesn't want to play in another country at the moment," said Llorente.

"Valencia have the power in their hands. David Silva can't go to another team because he has a contract for five more years."

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping to sign an attacking player before the August 31st transfer deadline, and Valencia's rejection of the bid may see Ferguson renew his interest in Dimitar Berbatov.
