Villa agree £7.8 million fee with Rangers for Cuellar
11/08/2008
Aston Villa are set to open talks with Carlos Cuellar after agreeing a fee with Rangers for the Spanish defender.
Villa are believed to have offered 10 million (£7.8 million) for the 26-year-old, which has triggered a release cause in his contract which allows him to speak to ther clubs.
Cuellar has been linked with a move away from Ibrox since Rangers lost their UEFA Champions League qualifier against FBK Kaunas last week.
He is due to hold talks with Villa manager Martin O'Neill on Tuesday, and the Spaniard is already looking forward to the move.
"I came to Rangers due to the professional manner of their officials and management and their promise of success," Cuellar told the Scottish club's official website.
"Everything I had been told about this fantastic club has been true and last year's Uefa Cup run is something I will never forget.
"My ambition has always been to play for my national team and I believe that playing in the biggest league in the world for Aston Villa will help me realise that."
Cuellar moved to Rangers from Osasuna last summer and was the Scottish Premier League Player of the Year last season.
If he does complete his move he will line-up in a new-look Villa back four this season, with O'Neill having already added full-backs Nicky Shorey and Luke Young to his squad.
