Villa skipper Barry confirms exit wish
11/06/2008
Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry has confirmed to the club that he wants to leave this summer in order to join Premier League rivals Liverpool.
The 27-year-old, who has long been linked with a move to Merseyside, has been in discussions with Villa boss Martin O'Neill and club owner Randy Lerner over his future.
However, it appears the rumours are true that Barry's head has been turned by interest from a club who are in the Champions League.
In a statement today, Villa said: "Gareth Barry has stated in discussions with our manager he would like to leave Aston Villa to join Liverpool.
"But Liverpool's bid for the player has been rejected and they have been informed of Villa's continued position in this matter."
It is thought that Reds manager Rafael Benitez, who initially declared his interest in Barry with a £10 million offer, has made an improved bid in the region of £12 million.
However, Villa are holding out for £15 million for a player who has become an established England regular in the last 12 months due to his superb performances at the heart of the Villa midfield.
