Violence foils United's parade plans
16/05/2008
Manchester United's plans to hold a homecoming victory parade should they win the Champions League next Wednesday have been hit by earlier football-related violence in the city.
Local authorities and police have cancelled the parade after fighting broken out when Manchester staged the Uefa Cup final earlier this week.
Fifteen police officers were injured in the clashes with supporters, mostly involving Rangers fans, while 11 supporters have been charged with various offences.
Trouble broke first broke out in Piccadilly Gardens after one of the giants screens broke down during the game, which Rangers went on to lose 2-0 to Zenit St Petersburg.
United are in Moscow next Wednesday for the all-English Champions League final with Chelsea.
The club had planned to parade the Premier League trophy they won last week as well as the European trophy if they win in the Russian capital.
But a joint statement said on Friday: "Manchester City Council, Trafford Council and Manchester United are working with Greater Manchester police to identify suitable opportunities, given the necessary logistical demands to ensure security and safety, to appropriately celebrate United's achievements this season.
"There will not be a parade immediately following the Uefa final next week but details are being discussed to organise an event which may take place during the summer."
