Wenger: Gallas still has future at Arsenal
22/11/2008
Arsene Wenger insisted that William Gallas still has a future at Arsenal, but hinted the Frenchman may no longer be the club captain.
Gallas was dropped from the squad that suffered a 3-0 loss away at Manchester City today after he criticised his team-mates for lacking courage and revealed there was dressing room unrest at the club.
Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia captained the side on his 100th appearance for Arsenal, but Wenger refused to be drawn into whether Gallas would be given the armband when he returns to the side.
"Of course he has a future at the club, but the less we talk the better it is," Wenger told BBC Radio 5 Live. "We can change a captain without having to make a political issue of it.
"I will not speak about William Gallas in a post-match interview. He is a player who did not play today, so what can he do? Nothing.
"Why should we not talk about (Cesc) Fabregas and the other nine players who are not here? We can go on until midnight and I will give the same answer to the same question."
The defeat at City sees Arsenal fall 10 points behind joint league leaders Chelsea and Liverpool. The Gunners need to go on a winning run now if they are to have any chance of winning the league.
But with an injury list that includes Fabregas, Theo Walcott, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Eduardo, Tomas Rosicky and Emmanuel Eboue, they have a tough few weeks ahead of them.
