Wenger 'has money to spend'

28/11/2008

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has claimed manager Arsene Wenger will have money to spend on new players in January, if he so wishes.

The Gunners are languishing in fifth place in the Premier League table and already find themselves ten points behind joint league leaders Chelsea and Liverpool before December.

But speaking on Arsenal TV, Hill-Wood said he will make some cash available for Wenger to spend on new faces - provided the manager feels it is appropriate.

"There have been suggestions that we keep stopping [Wenger] from buying - that is not the case," he said.

"He's very sensible with the way he approaches the transfer market, he's not going to buy anybody just because the press or fans say he should.

"He's only going to buy somebody if he thinks they're going to improve what is a young squad but a very talented one.

"He certainly has got money if he wants to spend it."

In terms of his expectations for the rest of the season, Hill-Wood said the club are already turning their attentions to the Champions League as the most realistic chance of silverware - aiming for a top-four spot and saying it would be "wonderful" to win the European Cup.

"I certainly want to finish in the top four in the league, and perhaps [win] the Champions League," he said.

"We've played pretty well in Europe on the whole so far, and that would be very nice."ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18903166-ADNFCR
