Women's pair become Britain's fourth rowing finalists
12/08/2008
Louisa Reeve and Olivia Whitlam became the fourth British crew to qualify for the weekend's Olympic finals at Shunyi Rowing-Canoeing Park, in Beijing.
The duo finished second in the repechage behind the New Zealand team, and will now line-up in the final this weekend.
Team GB's other rowing finalists are the men's eight, the women's quad and women's double sculls.
"I thought I'd just feel relieved at qualifying, but actually I'm really pleased, too," said Reeve.
It was also a good day for British lightweight women's double scull of Helen Casey and Hester Goodsell, who progressed to the semi-final.
Team GB already has as many finalists as in Athens four years ago and Sydney in 2000, with seven boats still in with a chance of joining them.
"I'm really pleased with what we've achieved so far", said David Tanner, Team GBs rowing team leader.
"We've shown the strength in depth again which began to emerge at the World Championships in Munich. Here in Beijing those who have needed to lift their standards have done so. Now we will see some fantastic racing in the next few days."
