Yakubu to miss rest of the season

30/11/2008

Everton striker Yakubu is out for the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The Nigerian fell awkwardly after a challenge from Ledley King in the tenth minute at White Hart Lane.

Yakubu was replaced by Louis Saha, who was later stretchered off with a hamstring injury.

With teenager James Vaughan out until the new year with a knee injury, Yakubu's compatriot Victor Anichebe is the Toffees' only available striker.

Everton boss David Moyes said he hoped money would be available in the January transfer window.

"It is well documented that we don't have great amounts of cash here and getting involved in January certainly wouldn't have been our ideal plan," the Scot said.

"I have a really good chairman and board and I'm sure they will do everything they can to help us.

"We've had no luck injury-wise. But I'm hopeful that the group will work hard and respond to the challenge, especially Anichebe who, whilst only young, has real quality.

"We'll see where we are and what we can do when the time comes in the new year."

Anichebe is set to be the lone striker when Everton clash with Aston Villa at Goodison Park next Sunday.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18903992-ADNFCR
