Young Welsh side claim win over Danes
19/11/2008
Wales fielded a young side against Denmark but that did not stop them recording a 1-0 win in their friendly match in Copenhagen.
Craig Bellamy scored the winning goal, as John Toshack gave debuts to Arsenal's Aaron Ramsay and Manchester City's Ched Evans.
Wales enjoyed the best of the first-half action, with Evans and Ramsay both looking bright. However, Toshack's side were predominantly on the back foot in the second 45 minutes.
Evans was in the action quickly, sending a shot just wide of the post ten minutes in to the match.
Ramsay then had an opportunity for glory snatched away from him by team-mate Craig Bellamy who chose to shoot from a tight angle instead of passing to an unmarked Ramsay inside the box.
Thomas Rasmussen then had Denmark's first opportunity but thankfully for Wales his shot was also slightly off target.
Wales continued to press forward and Bellamy, despite his earlier profligacy, was again to the fore. This time the West Ham United striker was denied by a good save from Thomas Sorensen.
Two chances in quick succession fell to Evans just before half-time but again Wales failed to make the most of their good attacking play. Evans' first effort was blocked by a last-ditch tackle and the City player then fired his next shot over the bar.
Denmark's midfield managed to take more control of the match in the second half and therefore restricted Wales' scoring opportunities.
The home side came close to breaking the deadlock when Soren Larsen fired just past the angle of the goal on the hour-mark.
Denmark created another chance for Larsen soon after that but Wales keeper Boaz Myhill made a good save before Leon Andreasen sent the rebound over the bar.
Wales struggled to impose themselves in the second half but rewarded for their stout defending when Bellamy pounced on the counter-attack.
The striker picked the ball up just inside the Denmark half, beat his man and fired past Sorensen from 20 yards out.
Wales had to dig deep to preserve their lead with Myhill making an excellent save from Martin Vingaard before Larsen hit the crossbar in injury-time.
