Adams urges Sven to appoint Terry captain
09/11/2005
Former England and Arsenal skipper Tony Adams has today urged Sven-Goran Eriksson to give John Terry the national team captain's armband before the start of the World Cup in Germany.
Adams believes that current England captain David Beckham lacks the presence and leadership qualities possessed by the Chelsea skipper and that a change in captaincy could help inspire Eriksson's team to great things this coming summer.
Speaking at the headquarters of England sponsors Nationwide, Adams said: "David is the captain at the moment and Sven has made that decision and he's got his reasons for doing that."
But he added: "Some people are natural captains and I would definitely like to see John Terry as England captain.
"It is a cliche but he is a winner and he drives the team. He gives everything and other players see that and it rubs off."
Adams found himself in a similar position before Euro 96 when then-manager Terry Venables transferred captaincy to him from David Platt.
This move unquestionably helped inspire England to the semi-finals of the competition and Adams believes that a similar move now would be equally, if not more, beneficial.
"Sven's got a big call and I hope he is strong enough to make that decision, and I hope personalities don't stand in the way," he added.
