Alonso demands Liverpool signings
04/10/2005
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso believes manager Rafael Benitez must delve into the transfer market when the window opens in January to strengthen his squad.
The European champions have stuttered to their worst league start in 13 years this campaign and recently endured their heaviest defeat at Anfield in nearly 40 years, succumbing 4-1 to Premiership leaders Chelsea.
Benitez has remained reticent in the face of negative press about this start but his fellow Spaniard Alonso believes the Reds coach should take decisive action and sign big name reinforcements to turn around the club's fortunes.
"We are trying to use all the options we have at the moment, but I think you can see we still need a little more," said Alonso, who moved to Anfield for £10.5 million from Real Sociedad last year.
"All we can do is wait until the transfer window opens again in January. Until then we must start winning as soon as possible because we are not in a comfortable position."
Liverpool currently find themselves in lowly 13th place in the Premiership and a massive 17 points behind Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.
But Alonso believes that his side should not be overly concerned by this and instead, should just focus on winning a second league game of the season, although even this is not without its problems.
"I think it's better not to look at the league table at this moment," he said.
"We must keep our focus and try to think only about our next Premiership match against Blackburn, but it's difficult for us with the international games coming up now."
