Andy Murray out of Swiss tournament
28/10/2005
Andy Murray is out of the Davidoff Swiss Indoors at the quarter final stage, after producing a superb display against Fernando Gonzalez.
Murray took the world number 17 to a decisive third set, but was unable to cope with the Chilean's big ground strokes in the final set.
Fernando Gonzalez ran out the 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 winner and progresses into the semi-final where he will play Dominik Hrbaty.
Murray lost a tight first set to the Chilean number four seed and it looked as though Gonzalez would be too strong for the young Scot.
However Murray staged an exhilarating fight back in the second set, he saved repeated break points before securing the set 6-3.
His determination and pressure, particularly on the Chilean's serve led to a series of unforced errors and Murray took a 4-2 lead, before serving out to win the second set.
Gonzalez ultimately showed his experience and came out extremely powerfully in the third set. He broke Murray early and swept to an impressive final set victory.
Gonzalez has peaked in the rankings just outside the world top ten at number 13. The 25-year-old has scooped $3,265,510 in a six year professional career.
Murray beat compatriot Tim Henman and Tomas Berdych in successive days before finally being knocked out of the indoor tournament.
