Argentina seeks F1 return

26/10/2005

Fans of Formula One racing in Argentina could see the sport return in 2007.

Argentina last hosted a grand prix in Buenos Aires in 1998, but the authorities in the province of San Luis are now hoping to secure a date in the F1 calendar.

San Luis governor Alberto Rodriguez Saa has contacted F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone seeking a new slot the season after next.

According to a local publication, Clarin, Mr Rodriguez Saa is yet to receive a reply from Ecclestone, but remains confident of reaching an agreement.

The F1 authorities have always been keen to take the sport to new markets in a bid to drum up support and drive the advertising revenues that are so vital to its survival.

In recent years Dubai, China and Turkey have all joined the grand prix circuit.

Mr Rodriguez Saa and his colleagues hope that the recent development of the Rosendo Hernandez circuit will help get Argentina back on the list of grand prix destinations.

F1 is a popular sport in South America with the continent represented in the drivers' championship by Juan Pablo Montoya of Columbia and Rubens Barrichello, Felipe Massa and Antonio Pizzonia of Brazil.
