Arsenal Vela bid in doubt
25/10/2005
Arsenal's attempt to sign one of the brightest young talents in South America is in doubt after Mexican sensation Carlos Vela announced he is eyeing a move to Spain.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been impressed with the forward, who recently top scored in the world under-17 championships, and has offered him a trial at Highbury this week.
However, the player, currently contracted to Guadalajara side Chivas, has said he is flattered by Arsenal's interest but is keen to remain in Mexico before moving to Spain to play in La Liga.
"My future is in Spanish football," the 17-year-old told the Es Mas newspaper.
"But we should listen to the offers that will be made to know if I will leave to go abroad or I will stay with Chivas of Guadalajara. That is where I have started my career."
Arsenal had been confident of reaching a deal for the youngster particularly after Chivas vice president Nestor de la Torre suggested a move to London was possible.
"It is very serious, this is what we wanted, for a club to talk directly with us and things are going well," he stated.
Real Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona have expressed interest in the Mexican who is valued at about £2 million.
