Australia complete Super Series whitewash

09/10/2005

Australia have completed a 3-0 whitewash of the World XI in the Super Series after they won the third one day international by 156 runs.

For the third successive game, Australia batted first and were set on their way by Adam Gilchrist, who made 32 from 31 balls, and Ricky Ponting, who made 68.

There was a scare for the World XI and England as Andrew Flintoff was hit on the right wrist attempting to convert a caught and bowled chance from Ricky Ponting.

The England all-rounder was taken to hospital for an x-ray but later returned to bat in his original position of number six and made 21 from 25 balls.

Australia's innings was finished off by Mike Hussey and Shane Watson, who put on 145 for the 6th wicket to take Australia to 293-5 in their 50 overs.

The World XI again failed with the bat and were reeling at 27-4, with only Flintoff (21) and Kumar Sangakkara (37) offering any real resistance.

Afridi provided some late entertainment with three boundaries off his first four balls, including a massive six off the first ball he faced.

However, it was another disappointing performance from the World XI as they were all out for 137, with Brett Lee and Shane Watson taking four wickets apiece.
