Australia in command as World XI falters

15/10/2005

Australia have established a dominant position on the second day of the Super Test after the star batting line-up of the World XI again failed to live up to its potential.

The World XI were bowled out for 190 after England's Andrew Flintoff had finished off the Aussies in the morning session, claiming three wickets as Australia added just 14 runs before being all out for 345.

The day began well for the World XI as Flintoff struck before a run had been added to the overnight score, removing Adam Gilchrist lbw with a ball that swung into the left-hander.

The Englishman then took the wickets of Shane Warne and Brett Lee before Glenn McGarth was run out by a smart piece of fielding by Rahul Dravid.

It was downhill from there, however, as the World XI continued their poor batting form from the one dayers as they slumped to 43-3.

There was then a revival as India's Virender Sehwag and South Africa's Jacques Kallis put on 91 for the fourth wicket before Sehwag was out for 76.

The World XI then crumbled, going from 134-3 to 190 all out as only Andrew Flintoff made any telling contribution with the bat as he smashed four sixes off leg spinner Stuart MacGill as he made 35 from 36 balls.

The Aussies then moved to 66-1 before bad light stopped play at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
