Australia on top with Gilchrist ton
07/10/2005
Adam Gilchrist has put Australia in an almost unbeatable position in the second Super Series one-dayer against the World team in Melbourne.
The wicketkeeper, who opens the batting for the Aussies in the one-day format, scored the fastest century ever by an Australian, hitting his 103 from 79 balls and reaching 100 in 76.
The stunning knock included eight fours and four sixes, proving that Gilchrist is back to his best after a dismal performance in the Ashes last summer.
In England he was consistently dismissed by Andrew Flintoff bowling round the wicket and getting the ball to reverse-swing both ways.
But back in Australia with the white one-day ball Gilchrist seemed dominant again, until the part-time spin of Virender Sehwag dismissed him.
Australia reached an almost insurmountable score of 328 from their 50 overs, and they did so only losing four wickets.
Every Australian batsman contributed, with Simon Katich reaching 47, and Ricky Ponting (66) and Damien Martyn (54) both hitting half-centuries.
Martyn was eventually bowled by Flintoff, giving the talismanic England all-rounder his first wicket of the Super Series.
The World team now have a mountain to climb if they are going to win the match and level the series, while Australia just need to bowl with some control to win the first ever Super Series one-day competition.
