Australia seal win over World

05/10/2005

Australia have beaten the World XI by 93 runs in the first one-dayer of the Super Series.

The World team can still win the one-day tournament, however, with two games remaining at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne.

Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss and chose to bat, a decision which seemed wise once openers Adam Gilchrist (45) and Simon Katich (58) had put on 80 for the first wicket.

Andrew Flintoff posted a poor bowling performance, giving away 66 runs in nine overs without taking a wicket.

But the spinners came to the rescue for the World team, with Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan dismissing the dismally out-of-form Damien Martyn for a duck, before bagging the wicket of Katich.

New Zealand's Daniel Vettori then came to the fore, as he ran through Australia's middle and lower order, taking four wickets in ten overs for just 33 runs.

Some late hitting from Brett Lee, who scored an unbeaten 26 from just 17 runs, helped Australia to a respectable 255 for 8 after their allotted 50 overs.

But the World's response was dismal, as only Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (64) and Flintoff (38) made notable contributions.

Glenn McGrath dismissed Sehwag and South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis, conceding just 13 runs from seven overs, while Kevin Pietersen was snared by Shane Watson lbw for two.

Great names such as Brian Lara (0) and Rahul Dravid (4) failed dismally as the World XI were bowled out for 162 after 41.3 overs.
