Australia win one-day Super Series

07/10/2005

Australia have won the inaugural one-day Super Series after beating Shaun Pollock's underwhelming World team in the second game.

Faced with the formidable task of knocking off 329 runs in 50 overs, the World started well, with opener and super sub Chris Gayle scoring a hearty 54 off 48 deliveries, 38 of which came from boundaries.

He was joined in a 98-run second-wicket partnership with Kumar Sangakkara, whose 61 off 44 balls put the World in position for an unlikely victory.

But two run-outs and another Brian Lara failure later, and they were staring down the barrel at 157 for 5.

England's Ashes hero Andrew Flintoff (42) went some way towards rectifying the situation, but it was always going to be a tough ask ever since Adam Gilchrist scored the fastest ever Australian century in the morning.

Kevin Pietersen (16) had to use Gayle as a runner after picking up cramp while fielding earlier, and it wasn't long before Australia had bowled them all out for 273, 56 runs short of victory.

This makes the third Super Series one-dayer redundant, so fans will have to wait till the six-day Test in Sydney next week for the possibility of some competitive cricket.
