Barca reject Lampard link

07/11/2005

Barcelona have played down reports linking the club with a move for Frank Lampard.

The former West Ham star has emerged as one of Europe's finest midfield players over the past two years, cementing a place in the England team and impressing in the Premiership with his goal scoring and consistent high-level performances.

Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid have both been linked with a move for the 27-year-old in recent times.

Txiqui Beguiristain, Barca's sporting director, was quoted as saying that the Catalan club "would love" to sign Lampard in the future if the player decided to leave the Premiership champions.

"We haven't made any offers to Chelsea because we believe it would be impossible for him to leave them at the moment," Beguiristain was quoted as saying.

"But in the future, if he wants to come to Spain our doors will always be open."

However the Spanish champions have played down these reports, distancing Beguiristain from the above comments.

"Txiki Begiristain denies having made comments to the English press about the Chelsea player Frank Lampard," read an official Barcelona statement.

Despite playing in midfield, Lampard has already scored ten goals in the league this season – more than any other Premiership player.
