Barcelona qualify for knockout stages
02/11/2005
Barcelona secured their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League after thumping Panathinaikos 5-0 in the Nou Camp.
The Greek side were 4-0 down at half-time as Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o scored a hat trick while Mark van Bommel and Argentine prodigy Lionel Messi also scored.
The other qualification place in group C is still up for grabs after Werder Bremen beat Udinese 4-3.
The German side were cruising with a 3-0 lead before three goals in six minutes dragged the Italians back into the game before Johan Micoud scored his second of the night for Bremen.
Two goals in injury time denied FC Thun a second Champions League victory as Ajax ran out 4-2 winners in Switzerland.
With the game tied at two-apiece, goals from Nigel de Jong and Nourdin Boukhari put the Dutch side in pole position for second spot behind Arsenal in group B
Villareal went top of group D after an 82nd minute goal from Marcos Senna sealed a 1-0 win over Benfica.
The Spanish side will qualify for the knockout stages if they beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in two weeks time.
Juventus gained revenge for their defeat in Germany two weeks ago as they beat Bayern Munich 2-1 thanks to an 85th minute goal by David Trezeguet.
Club Brugge kept up their pressure on both sides, however, after beating Rapid Vienna 3-2 in the Jan Breydal Stadion.
