Beckham "happy" to sign new Real deal
26/09/2005
David Beckham has revealed that he is "very happy" to be opening discussions about extending his contract with Real Madrid.
The England captain has been linked with a return to the Premiership but, after starting his third season at the Bernabeu, Beckham appears to be certain that he wants to remain in Spain.
"My life here is perfect and I'm happy at Real Madrid so of course I want to stay as long as I can," the 30-year-old said.
"We have spoken about a meeting in the next couple of months but we'll just have to wait because we've got so many matches and I need to concentrate on the football for now."
Beckham has one year left on his current deal with Real and there had been some suggestion that the former Manchester United midfielder would want to end his career back in England.
But it appears as though the Englishman has no intention of following international team-mate Michael Owen who left Madrid for Newcastle United this summer after a year in the Liga out of the club.
Nor is he planning to follow in the footsteps of England rugby captain Jason Robinson and retire from the international arena, he added.
"I don't know about that," he said of the likelihood of an imminent retirement.
"It is important for me to have four or five more years in football. My family is the most important thing for me, of course, but I am with them every day."
