Betis stun Chelsea

01/11/2005

Chelsea conceded their first goal of this season's Champions League and it proved to be costly as Real Betis stunned the English champions 1-0 in Seville.

Dani's close-range effort midway through the first half was enough for the Spanish side and despite throwing everything at them, Chelsea were unable to get back into the game.

Chelsea began the game full of confidence after thrashing Betis 4-0 at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago and looked content to control their opponents in the opening exchanges, with few chances being created.

Betis were forced to make two substitutions inside the first 21 minutes, the second saw dangerman Ricardo Oliveria, who scored 22 goals in the Primera Liga last season, replaced by Dani.

This misfortune for Betis turned to joy on 28 minutes as a cross by Jesus Capi eluded Edu but Dani, coming in at the back post, steadied himself and slotted the ball under Petr Cech.

Joe Cole tested Pedro Contreras on 38 minutes but the goalkeeper saved well, before keeping out Arjen Robben's effort four minutes later.

Chelsea could have been two down before the break as Dani missed a relatively simple chance after Cech had saved a long-range effort from Edu.

Chelsea came out with new purpose in the second half but couldn't find a way through.

Their best chance fell to Michael Essien with twenty minutes to go as Damien Duff's cross was returned into the area by Shaun Wright-Phillips but the Ghanaian's shot hit one post, rolled along the line and struck the other post, before rebounding into Contreras' grateful arms.
