Boro book second round place
29/09/2005
Middlesbrough are through to the second round of the Uefa Cup after a goalless draw in Greece saw them beat FC Xanthi 2-0 on aggregate.
With a two-goal advantage from the first leg at the Riverside, Steve McClaren's team were always in control against Xanthi.
But the Greek team, who included former Middlesbrough midfielder Emerson in their line-up, looked threatening in the opening stages.
The visitors soon took control of the game, however, and solid defending ensured that Boro held onto their two-goal lead and progressed to the next stage of the Uefa Cup.
Scottish side Hibernian put in a much less controlled performance as they went down 5-1 away to Dnipropetrovsk.
Having drawn 0-0 in the first leg, the Edinburgh team would have been hopeful of progressing against their Ukrainian opposition.
But despite pulling level after going a goal down in the opening minute, Hibs let the match slip away from them and their European dream is over for another season.
