Campbell set to lose England race
06/10/2005
The race to play alongside John Terry in England's central defence against Austria on Saturday looks to have been won by the out-of-form Rio Ferdinand.
The news comes as contrary to widespread calls for the Manchester United defender to be dropped and means that Sol Campbell, so impressive for Arsenal since returning from injury, is likely to start the game on the substitutes' bench.
Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson paired Terry, his first choice, and Ferdinand in a full-scale practice match yesterday and although he did not confirm his team selection at an ensuing press conference, many now believe the Swede will keep faith with this partnership.
Ferdinand has, even by his own admission, been far from firing on all cylinders for his club this season and revealed that he would not be surprised if his indifferent form saw him fall to third choice.
Campbell meanwhile, is proving a player rejuvenated, scoring twice against Everton on his Premiership return and impressing all, particularly his team-mates, with his strong mentality since making his comeback.
"He is really focused now," said Arsenal full-back Ashley Cole, who himself misses out on England's World Cup double-header qualifier through injury.
"He is a bit more solid and it makes us stronger as a team. He seems to bring the best out in me and a lot of the other players at Arsenal as well."
Large segments of the media have been urging Eriksson to recall Campbell to the side for the first time since he captained England in the 2-1 win over the USA in May.
However, these calls do appear to have been unheeded by the coach, meaning Ferdinand will be under scrutiny and intense pressure to perform and to avoid any slips in the crucial games.
