Carling Cup round-up
25/10/2005
Crystal Palace provided the shock of the night in the Carling Cup as they beat European Champions and last year's beaten finalists Liverpool 2-1.
Dougie Freedman put Palace ahead before Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard returned to the side with a goal.
However, Marco Reich sealed a well deserved win for the Championship side as Liverpool's poor form away from Anfield continued.
Arsenal's youngsters cruised past Sunderland 3-0 in front of a sell-out crowd at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats had reduced ticket prices to £5 for adults and £1 for children but this could not inspire the home side as goals from Emmanuel Eboue and two from Robin van Persie gave Arsenal the win.
Doncaster, conquerors of Manchester City in the last round, made it into the fourth round as two goals in the last six minutes from Paul Heffernan put the League One side through at the expense of Gillingham.
Last year's semi-finalists Watford took the Premiership's surprise package, Wigan, to extra-time but two goals in the last three minutes from Andreas Johansson and a Ryan Taylor penalty put the Championship side out.
Junichi Inamoto scored a 40 yard scorcher as West Brom won the battle of the Premiership against Fulham 3-2 after extra time.
Reading took the honours over Sheffield United as the top two in the Championship went head-to-head at the Madejski Stadium.
Two goals from Dave Kitson saw the second-place Royals come out on top 2-0.
Elsewhere, Blackburn eased past Leeds United at Ewood Park 3-0, a Kevin Phillips goal saw Aston Villa beat Burnley 1-0 and a last minute goal from David Livermore saw Millwall overcome the lowest-ranking side left in the competition, Mansfield, 3-2.
