Chelsea dominate Ballon d'Or shortlist
24/10/2005
Premiership champions Chelsea have had seven of their players named on the 50-man shortlist for this year's European footballer of the year award.
Chelsea's tally, including the likes of Frank Lampard, John Terry and Michael Essien is second only to Juventus who have nine players shortlisted.
In total, 16 Premiership stars make the list, with four coming via Manchester United, three from European champions Liverpool and one each from Newcastle United and Arsenal.
There are seven Englishmen named in the list including Blues pair Lampard and Terry, United forward Wayne Rooney, national team skipper David Beckham, Liverpool duo Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard plus Newcastle's Michael Owen.
The Gunners' new all-time record scorer Thierry Henry is as expected one of the firm favourites for the Ballon d'Or.
However, AC Milan's Andriy Shevchenko will be vying to retain his crown, while Barcelona star Ronaldinho and his Brazilian compatriot Robinho of Real Madrid have also been named.
The decision will be announced on Monday November 28th and is made by a panel of international football journalists.
