Chelsea win again as rivals falter
24/09/2005
Chelsea took advantage of rivals Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United dropping points with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa.
Chelsea conceded their first goal of the season just before half time, yet two Frank Lampard goals at Stamford Bridge gave the champions their seventh straight league win of the season.
Mickael Essien and Lampard both forced saves from Thomas Sorensen, yet it was Villa who took the lead.
Luke Moore breached the record-breaking defence on 43 minutes, pouncing on a long ball from Sorensen, which Juan Pablo Angel had flicked on, before slotting the ball past Petr Cech.
The champions were not behind for long, Frank Lampard equalised before the interval with a free kick.
William Gallas headed over and Damien Duff saw a pile driver turned over the bar by Sorensen as the home side looked to turn the dominance into a goal.
Lampard did give his side the lead and from the penalty spot just 15 minutes from time.
Olof Mellberg was penalised for a foul on Didier Drogba and although Sorenson dived the right way he was unable to keep out Lampard's spot kick.
As Chelsea kept up their 100 per cent record and continue to impress, Arsenal once again dropped points away from home.
West Ham and Arsenal drew 0-0 at Upton Park with neither side doing enough for victory.
Teddy Sheringham came close with a first half free kick and substitute Bobby Zamora headed wide when well placed as both sides created few chances.
Charlton continued their fine start to the season with a 2-1 victory over West Brom at the Hawthorns.
Danny Murphy gave Charlton an early lead, scoring from the penalty spot on nine minutes, and the former Liverpool player doubled his side's lead on 31 minutes from close range.
Curtis Davis pulled a goal back for the home side on 51 minutes with his first West Brom goal, with a header.
However Bryan Robson's side failed to find an equaliser and are still yet to win in the Premiership after falling behind.
