Chilean winger set for Liverpool move

20/10/2005

Chilean international Mark Gonzalez is close to agreeing a four-year deal with European champions Liverpool.

The winger is currently plying his trade at Spanish side Albacete after seeing a loan move to Anfield collapse this summer because of work permit complications.

But with Chile rising to 72nd in the world rankings, Gonzalez's hopes of the issue being resolved appear to be improving.

Gonzalez is on his way from Spain to his homeland to undergo further treatment on his cruciate knee ligament injury but speaking to reporters at Madrid airport, he suggested that a move to Liverpool is imminent.

"Yes, I have already signed as a new player of Liverpool," he said.

"I do not have a lot of time to speak but tomorrow, at eight in the morning, I will give a press conference when I arrive in Santiago."

He added: "The contract with the English club is for four years but I cannot give you any more details."

Liverpool have confirmed the move is close to conclusion but a club spokesperson insisted there are still some loose ends to be sorted out.

"Following the player's knee injury, the original intention was to take him on loan with an option to make the deal permanent but as Mark is recovering well, a loan deal is no longer an issue and we have agreed a long term contract to bring him to Anfield," the spokesperson said.

"However, he will only play for Liverpool once he obtains either a work permit or European passport."
