Clijsters romps to Luxembourg victory

02/10/2005

Kim Clijsters took another stride closer to the top of the world rankings by triumphing at the Fortis Championships.

The US Open champion, currently ranked third in the world, comfortably defeated Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-2 6-4 in Luxembourg.

Clijsters did not drop a set all tournament and proved too strong for her unseeded opponent, who dropped her first three service games.

The Belgian was forced to dig deep to close out the victory, and was broken twice in the second set before taking and consolidating the crucial advantage when tied at 4-4.

"This was the first tournament that I ever won and that's why it's so nice to be back here for my first tournament after my US Open win," said Clijsters, who has now won the event on five occasions.

"I'll definitely be back next year. I'm very superstitious, so I will keep doing it."

Clijsters' success over Groenefeld represents her 26th win in 27 matches and she is subsequently catching Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport in the world rankings.
