Contepomi inspires Leinster to victory

30/10/2005

Leinster kept their hopes of progressing in the Heineken Cup alive with a convincing victory over the Glasgow Warriors.

Leinster secured maximum points with a 30-22 triumph and after an inspirational performance from Felipe Contepomi.

Kieran Lewis scored the opening try of the match, after some fine skill from Contepomi, only for Graeme Morrison to pull the Warriors level with his first of two tries.

A Contepomi penalty and a Ciaran Potts try put Leinster 16-8 up at the interval.

The Warriors came out strongly in the second half and were rewarded through Morrison's second try.

However the Scots failed to remain in contention for long and with Contepomi kicking his third penalty of the match.

While Contepomi was starring, his opposite number Dan Parks struggled with the boot, missing six attempts, and the Leinster number ten then added a try of his own as his side extended their lead.

Gordon D'Arcy secured the bonus point and added gloss to the scoreline before Andrew Henderson grabbed a consolation try for the home side.

Clermont Auvergne secured maximum points with a 34-14 triumph over the Ospreys.

Shane Williams put Ospreys in the lead, with the winger touching over in the corner on five minutes.

However the home side were shaken into life by the early setback and went on to score four tries through Alexandre Audebert, Breyton Paulse, Gonzalo Longo and Sam Broomhall.

Wales fly-half Stephen Jones also added 14 points for Clermont with his boot.

The result leaves all to play for in pool three of the Heineken Cup with all four teams having lost one and won one.
