Daly leads Montgomerie at Harding Park
09/10/2005
John Daly holds a one shot lead going into the final day of the American Express Championship in San Francisco after carding a third round 67.
The American is one shot clear of Scotland's Colin Montgomerie, who had topped the leaderboard after the first two days, with Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods tied for third place, a further shot behind.
Daly's day started badly, however, as he bogeyed the first and double-bogeyed the third but recovered with birdies at the 4th, 7th, 14th and 16th and an eagle on the 10th to post his third successive 67 of the tournament and move to nine-under overall.
Montgomerie is still in contention for his first strokeplay title in America after carding a one-under-par 69 but could have been ahead of Daly if his putting had matched his approach play.
Spain's Sergio Garcia had a very good round, moving up from tied-10th to tied-3rd with Tiger Woods after a third round 67.
Having parred the first nine holes, Garcia made three birdies on the back nine to move to seven-under for the tournament and give himself a chance of victory on the final day.
Tiger Woods is also in contention heading into the final day after shooting a 68 which included five birdies but also three bogeys.
