Davenport struggles to Swiss title
23/10/2005
Lindsay Davenport won her fourth Zurich Open title with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory over Patty Schnyder.
The number one seed proved too good for the home favourite, yet only after struggling through the first set.
Davenport, who has made the final in each of her six appearances at the event, failed to hit the levels she is capable of in the first set, yet went a break up in the seventh game.
However Schnyder broke back and a tie-breaker was needed to decide the set.
Davenport finally took the first set, winning the tie-break 7-5, despite making 23 unforced errors.
The American's last three matches had all gone to three sets and looked to have taken their toll on Davenport, who went 3-1 down in the second after the two players had exchanged breaks.
Just as the Swiss fans were hoping Schnyder may force her way back into the tie, the experienced Davenport finally found her form and won five games in a row to take the match.
"You never get sick of winning, that could never happen," said Davenport, after claiming her third title in six weeks.
"It was a struggle, it wasn't the easiest tournament I've ever won," she admitted.
The victory will lift Davenport back to the top of the world rankings.
