Davydenko seals Masters qualification
04/11/2005
Nikolay Davydenko has secured his place at this year's Masters Cup in Shanghai.
The 24-year-old Russian ensured qualification for the end-of-season showcase tournament by advancing to the quarter finals of the Masters Series event in Paris.
The win guarantees that Davydenko has enough ATP tour points to finish in the top eight of the ATP Race, qualifying him to take part in the Masters Cup later this month.
"I did not want to think too much about it because I was very close but still needed to win matches and points," he said.
"Since the US Open, everybody around me was saying I had a big chance but I wasn't in yet."
He added: "It feels great, it's such a big achievement as there are 1,000 players in the rankings and I will be among the top eight. I know the tennis Masters Cup is a very special tournament and now I will experience it."
The Russian will be joined in Shanghai by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi and Guillermo Coria.
His qualification means that just one Masters berth is still up for grabs, with Croatian Ivan Ljubicic favourite to secure the place.
The Masters gets underway at the Qi Zhong stadium in Shanghai on November 13th.
