Edinburgh stun Wasps
23/10/2005
Edinburgh edged Wasps 32-31 in a dramatic Heineken Cup encounter on Sunday.
In a tight contest, both sides continually swapped the lead before Edinburgh caused an upset with a late score.
Mark van Gisbergen opened the scoring with two penalties in the first 11 minutes, before Chris Paterson halved the deficit on 16 minutes.
Just two minutes later Wasps reasserted their dominance with a converted Jonny O'Connor try after a powerful van Gisbergen break.
However Wasps' grasp on the game did not last long. Paterson kicked a penalty for Edinburgh and put his side on level terms after converting his own try.
Just as the game was finely poised, Josh Lewsey went over to give the visitors the advantage at the interval and this was compounded by van Gisbergen's successful conversion, which put Wasps 20-13 up.
The seesaw pattern of the match continued in the second period. Edinburgh started the half the stronger and Hugo Southwell went over on 46 minutes following a Phil Godman break.
Paterson, who was wayward with the boot in the first half, kicked three more penalties, while van Gisbergen replied with just one for Wasps as Edinburgh took a 24-20 lead.
The Premiership champions looked to have won the match with ten minutes to go after retaking the lead through a Paul Sackey try on 73 minutes and van Gisbergen's fourth penalty of the match just two minutes from time.
Despite Edinburgh being down to 14 men there was still a final twist to the tale.
Edinburgh replacement Simon Webster went under the posts in injury time, after combining well with Francisco Leonelli Morey, giving his side a narrow victory which stunned the visitors.
