Eight-week ban for White
19/10/2005
Julian White has been hit with an eight-week suspension by the Rugby Football Union.
The Leicester, England and Lions prop was handed the ban after being sent off for fighting in his side's Premiership match with Newcastle Falcons at Welford Road last Friday.
The 32-year-old had pleaded guilty to the offence of striking Newcastle lock Andy Perry, which was deemed a mid-range offence by the RFU panel.
The player could have been hit with a ban of anything up to three months for the charge but the panel decided against imposing the maximum ban because of his plea and his public statements of remorse.
White has now been suspended until December 12th and has been ordered to pay £250 costs.
Panel chairman Richard Moon said the offence was committed "under extreme provocation and the action was in self-defence and had no obvious effect on the player he struck".
The Falcons player Perry has been handed a ban of four weeks for his part in the fracas and has also been ordered to pay £250 costs.
