England complete shock turnaround
02/11/2005
England have completed a remarkable turnaround in their tour match with the Pakistani Patron's XI to win by 52 runs.
Michael Vaughan's side had been staring down the barrel at the start of the hosts' second innings as they defended a lead of just 158 to avoid defeat.
But England's bowling attack were in inspired form on the final day at Rawalpindi, with Ashley Giles and Liam Plunkett in particularly devastating mood.
Both took four wickets during their spells but only after seeing the Patron's XI race to 50 without loss and appear well on their way to an emphatic victory.
However, after 'King of Spain' Giles had top scorer Yasir Hameed (30) caught by Andrew Strauss, the home side collapsed.
Hameed's co-opener Ashar Zaidi (26) put up some resistance before being caught by James Anderson off Plunkett but Misbah-ul-Haq's 14 was the only other score to breach double figures.
Spinner Shaun Udal gained the final two wickets, including that of Zulqarnain Haider (4), whose exit closed the Patron's XI innings on a meagre 105.
