England skittled for second day running

01/11/2005

England's batsmen have slumped in Pakistan for a second consecutive day in their match against a Patron's XI.

Six wickets went down in Rawalpindi for just 38 runs in 13 overs, as England's second innings ran into trouble.

Skipper Michael Vaughan found himself out lbw for a second day running – for a duck - while opener Andrew Strauss again registered single figures on six.

Mohammad Irshad, a relatively unknown 22-year-old, claimed three of the wickets in a seven-over spell for 22 runs, while Yasir Arafat took the wickets of Kevin Pietersen (10) and Geraint Jones (0) for just one run in a devastating two-over stint.

The innings highlight was the 16 runs notched up by Matt Prior after his half-century yesterday, but with just four wickets remaining England will struggle to build a competitive score.

Earlier in the day England's bowlers had made a promising start, with James Anderson, Liam Plunkett and Shaun Udal all taking three wickets to bowl out the Patron's XI for 211, with the tourists at one stage threatening their opponents on 150-9.

However, that success will be tempered by a relatively paltry lead of 84 going into the final day, particularly after the second day began with a declaration by England in their first innings on a score of 256-9 thanks to Marcus Trescothick's unbeaten 124.
