Euro job tempts Allardyce
05/10/2005
Bolton manager Sam Allardyce has dropped a bombshell on the Reebok by revealing he intends to work abroad at some stage in his career.
Allardyce has become a local hero in Bolton having turned the Trotters into an established Premiership side, capable of attracting some of the world's biggest names.
Now in his sixth year at the club, he also masterminded their first ever venture into Europe via the Uefa Cup thanks to a credible sixth place league finish last season.
But speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, Allardyce said he aspires to follow the path trod by a number of British coaches previously and try his hand at coaching in Europe.
"Some very good managers have left this country to go and manage in a foreign country and done exceptionally well," he said.
"Howard Kendall, Bobby Robson, Terry Venables, John Toshack and Graeme Souness - it shows we have had very good managers leave this country and do exceptionally well.
"That is something I want to challenge myself with, maybe later on in my career."
The affable coach, better known as Big Sam, managed Blackpool and Notts County before arriving in Bolton and currently boasts a highly commendable managing track record.
Since taking up the reigns at Blackpool in 1994, he has overseen 533 first team matches, of which 219 have ended in victory and only 143 in defeat.
