Ferguson focusing on Euro success
18/10/2005
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes his side have a better chance of lifting silverware in Europe than in the Premiership this season.
Speaking ahead of tonight's Champions League group clash with French side Lille at Old Trafford, the Scot admitted that Chelsea have established an almost unassailable lead in the home league already.
And while he insisted the race is by no means over just yet, he did admit that his side's chances of winning the Champions League were better than his chances of wrestling the Premiership crown away from Jose Mourinho's indomitable team.
"They [Chelsea] are in a very strong position. They are relentless," Ferguson said.
"It would be silly to only think about Europe, it's only October, but in the Champions League we need to negotiate another 13 matches to win it but in the Premiership it is another 30.
"We just have to try to stay in the slipstream of Chelsea and hope they slip up."
He added that he is confident of winning tonight despite the absence of boy-wonder Wayne Rooney, who is serving the second match of his two-game ban for sarcastically clapping in the face of referee Kim Milton Nielsen during the Champions League clash with Villarreal.
Welsh winger Ryan Giggs should be fit to start and make his 100th European outing for United while Scottish youngster Darren Fletcher could also return.
